There are film premieres that fill a cinema, and there are premieres that fill a room with something bigger than the film itself. When the cast of ON DIFFERENT GROUNDS arrived at ODEON Greenwich on August 28 for the UK premiere and fan meet and greet, it was clear from the opening minutes which kind this was going to be.
Billed by its producers as a pioneering Nollywood-Bollywood collaboration, ON DIFFERENT GROUNDS has spent months building a reputation as more than a romantic comedy. Directed by Mildred Okwo and produced by Nicolette Ndigwe-Kalu, the film follows the Fregenes, a divorced billionaire real-estate couple forced back into each other's orbit for their daughter's wedding, unaware she has engineered the entire celebration to reunite them. It is a story of family, spectacle and the glorious excess of African wedding culture, told in English and Igbo and set against the pulse of Lagos.
London got to meet the people behind that story in person. Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Bamike "Bambam" Olawunmi, Ifeanyi Kalu and Ozumba "Ozee" Mbadiwe walked into ODEON Greenwich to a crowd that had come for more than photographs. Across generations of Nollywood fandom, from viewers who grew up on Udokwu's earliest roles to a newer audience discovering Bambam and Ozee through reality television and Instagram-era fame, the meet and greet became a rare instance of the diaspora meeting its own culture at full strength.
Achebe Hope Foundation joined the film as Lead Impact Partner, adding a social-impact dimension to a campaign otherwise centred on cinema and entertainment. The Foundation's work focuses principally on Mother and Child Care and Education.
MARLEX Apartments, which operates a portfolio of more than 55 serviced and short-let properties across London, provided accommodation for members of the visiting cast during the London leg of the film's campaign.
The two partnerships gave London a distinct dimension within the ON DIFFERENT GROUNDS campaign, one that combined star power with a wider social and hospitality footprint. As screenings continue across ODEON Streatham, Manchester Great Northern, Birmingham Broadway Plaza and Milton Keynes, the film continues to extend its UK footprint, with London's meet and greet standing out as the stop where entertainment and impact met directly.
